(blue star) Driver monitoring

Human error is the cause of most car accidents. To prevent accidents caused by fatigue, inattentiveness, and distractedness, the latest cars models come with a built-in driver monitoring system that assists the driver in reaching their destination safely.

The system’s purpose is to look for any signs of fatigue, distraction, anger or similar states in order to trigger the appropriate safety measures when necessary. The monitoring includes detecting where the driver’s head is, where they are looking, whether they are drowsy, etc. The mail goal is to ensure that the driver is focused on the driving.

The combination of head tracking and gaze tracking allows the system to determine the driver’s viewing direction and attention level. For example, if the driver is tired or intoxicated, it typically manifests with head dropping down, closed or barely-open eyes and sudden head movements as they’re trying to stay awake. The driver can also get distracted by their phone, traffic, or something that’s happening in the car (for example, a heated discussion with other passengers). This means that the driver’s focus is no longer on the road ahead, which increases the chances of an accident. In such cases, the system can warn the driver and help bring their attention back to the road.

Besides the driver, it's useful to detect other passengers in the vehicle as well to confirm the total number of passengers. Furthermore, FaceAnalysis can be used to provide demographic information (age, gender) of everyone in the vehicle. Such information is valuable in case of an emergency, but it can also help increase the general safety of the passengers (for example, it can warn the parents about a child being left unattended in the vehicle).

FaceAnalysis can also estimate emotions of the driver and the passengers. For example, it can detect “undesirable” emotions such as anger in order to take necessary safety measures such as playing relaxing music or slowing the car down.

Many other useful functionalities can be based on face recognition. For example, only the verified persons can get access rights, which prevents car theft. The system can also remember someone’s preferences and restore them when an authenticated person enters the car. For example, the car can automatically adjust the seat, modify the position of mirrors, turn on the driver’s favorite music and more.

Finally, it’s possible to customize car preferences based on different drivers who are all designated to drive the specific vehicle. This relates to adjusting view mirrors, seat, radio station, car settings. Furthermore, car settings such as content recommendations, lighting or heating, can be personalized to the driver’s or passengers’ moods and states.

Driver monitoring systems play a huge role in the transition from manual to (semi)autonomous driving. To truly minimize the work for the driver and maximize safety at the same time, they need to be based on reliable software. Vehicle manufacturers choose visage|SDK because it combines face tracking, analysis and recognition, making it easy to develop a comprehensive solution.

(blue star) Biometrics

Facial recognition enables you to identify and verify people in seconds; facilitate secure financial transactions, eliminate waiting queues at events, monitor attendance, unlock services to verified owners, and more.

Our facial recognition technology provides quick and accurate results for surveillance, identification and identity verification. We have also developed liveness detection that helps fight off face spoofing attacks that aim to deceive a face recognition system by using a substitute for another’s person’s face (e.g. photo, video or a 3D mask).

FaceRecognition is flexible and easy to integrate into your existing solution, but we also offer custom development services for clients that prefer a custom, out-of-the-box solution.

(blue star) AR face filters

AR face filters have become a great way to entertain and engage audiences, and their popularity keeps growing. Face tracking is the foundation for many important functions behind AR solutions - from determining head position and gaze direction to detecting facial expressions and creating 3D models.

FaceTrack can track 99 facial landmarks with the frame rate of 30 fps on smartphones to over 100 fps on desktop computers. For specific use cases, we can reduce the number of tracked points to increase speed. This ensures the optimal performance for any use case.

There are countless possibilities of this technology for business and consumer uses:

Virtual try-on

A possibility to virtually try makeup, glasses, or jewellery is a must-have for brands in cosmetics, eyewear, and lifestyle industries. In just a few clicks, customers can check out how the chosen product looks on them. Quality face tracking allows them to get the realistic picture in real-time, even if they move their head around.

For customers, it’s a great way to easily find the product that suits them best, which is especially important in online shopping. Consequently, they are more likely to be satisfied with their purchase and remain loyal to their brand.

For brands, it’s a chance to increase sales (especially online) and gather valuable data for better analytics. They can add a virtual try on to their website, allowing users to try on products as they browse through the page. They can also build a mobile application with loyalty programs, social sharing options, shopping lists and more. Finally, the technology can help grow sales in physical stores, too, using smart mirrors or tablets.

However, virtual try-ons are not reserved for cosmetics and accessories only. They can also be used to preview the results of various aesthetic interventions such as dental treatments of cosmetic surgeries.

Gaming and entertainment

AR face filters are a great way to entertain your audience by transforming them into anything they can possibly imagine. It’s a great way to engage users and encourage them to create and share content.

However, face tracking doesn’t always have to be the core of a product – it can also be an addition that can make the product more suitable or attractive for the target market. A great example of such use case is Canon and their new portable photo maker Zoemini. Canon created an app with creative photo editing options – from borders and stickers to 3D face filters such as animal masks. After editing their photos, users were able to connect their smartphone to Zoemini portable printer via Bluetooth and immediately print their photos, creating fun and long-lasting memories.

Another example is FaceDanceChallenge, a game that uses human face as a joystick. Users have to mimic the emoticons shown on the screen to gain points. The game quickly vent viral and has more than 10 mil downloads to date.

Events and tours

AR face filters can help create immersive, unforgettable experiences at tours and events. They can be used to bring various characters to life (for example, historical people in museums), change people’s appearance in accordance with the main theme of the event, create fantastic photos, etc.

A great example of such a use case is Sakuya Lumina Night Walk in Osaka Castle, a tour that offers a stunning conception and production of immersive environment. Besides being amazed with surreal lighting and special effects, the visitors were also able to enjoy various face filters which helped them become a part of the story.
